Savage wins the first Sonic Drive-In in Minnesota?!

It’s been suggested that I write more about the Second Congressional District, so here is something that should be of interest to not only those in the Second, but those throughout the state:

Dundee Nursery on County Road 42 in Savage is going out of business and the owners are selling their property. Going in its place: Walgreen’s and Sonic Drive-In.

The Savage Planning Commission got its first look at River Bend Plaza development plan this week. The main attraction is the Sonic Drive-in, the first one in the state.

A representative of Net Lease Development LLC said they plan to demolish the building and greenhouses on the site and get construction under way this year. The Sonic and Walgreens are expected to be open by next summer.

Sonic, which specializes in a burger-themed menu with fries, milkshakes and freezies, will be 1,700-square-feet and include drive-in, drive-thru and walk-up services. Traffic through the site will primarily be one way due to the nature of the business operation. Angled parking under a protective canopy will be used for the drive-in stalls and a row of parking on one side of the site will be provided for patrons of the dining room/outdoor seating area.

I have watched many a Sonic commercial on cable and thought “Man, those slushies on TV look refreshing. I want one now!” only to be disappointed upon remembering that no Sonic is located within driving distance.

The days of disappointment will soon be over.

This is not just a landmark victory for the city of Savage but rather a triumph for the food service industry in the state of Minnesota.

    OMG!

When I attended the Ozarks Famous Writers School, Sonics were the drive-in of choice for the South’s most promising young novelists, screenwriters, and poets.

Now if I can just dig up the curtal sonnet to a Sonic that I drafted after a particularly inspiring chili dog with onions, consumed on the road to a writers-in-the-school in Pocahontas, Arkansas (the very poem that got my work into the National Library of Poetry), I can pass on to a better place knowing that true burger bliss has come to my beloved Minnesota. The circle of life is complete.

Sonnet to a Sonic? That is awesome.

Soon Sonic will be the drive-in of choice for the North’s most promising young bloggers.
